Want a good Whiskey 50/25 Warm up “Ride” ? Raise $ for a good cause WHILE riding your bike?

In May of 2010 my father was diagnosed with stage 3 Pancreatic cancer. On April 6th, 2013 it took my fathers life after a 3 year battle which included a Whipple procedure, multiple surgeries, cancer induced diabetes, and too many rounds of chemo and radiation to count.

My father was a retired Colonel in the US Army and served in the 6th and 11th Special Forces Groups, aka The Green Berets. He was known for his endurance and high tolerance for pain. Once, while parachuting in during an exercise, he landed wrong fracturing one heel and had severe stone bruises on both. He then went on to complete the exercise which included a 20 mile march with a 60 lb. ruck sack. He was given the nickname “Hondo” by his Special Forces team after John Wayne’s character in the movie. This ride will require endurance and a high tolerance for pain. Hence the name of this ride.

The 1st edition of THE HONDO was 73+ hard MTB miles and covered 4 trail systems in North PHX/Cave Creek. For some strange reason we lost about half of the expected attendees when I posted the GPS files 10 days before the ride. ; )

This year’s edition will have two loop options, shorter but faster pace to boost attendance. It is meant to be ridden hard, but we also encourage riding at your own pace in memoriam or honor of someone else.

“THE HONDO” will start at Flat Tire Bike Shop.

We will have two loop options:

The shorter loop option, or THE HONDETTE ( named for my mother ) will be the C4 loop from Flat Tire Bike Shop.

GPS File here:

The longer loop option, or THE HONDO, will encompass both Sonoran North and Sonoran South trails and will be 46 miles.

Food and FREE KEG BEER, Bitty’s, & Live Music at Mellow Johnny’s in Cave Creek.

The main goals of this ride is to:
1) Raise $ and awareness for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network aka PANCAN which was my father’s charity of choice.
2) Ride hard while having fun
3) Have fun while riding hard
4) Did I mention have fun?

ENTRY “FEE” is a $25 or more DONATION to PANCAN.ORG.

WHY PANCAN? Well, pancreatic cancer killed my father, and I’m going to do everything I can to kill it. And you can help me.

PANCAN raises $ for RESEARCH and lobbies for law change for RESEARCH.

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth most common cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States and the eighth worldwide. Pancreatic cancer has an extremely poor prognosis: for all stages combined, 1- and 5-year relative survival rates are 25% and 6%, respectively; for local disease the 5-year survival is approximately 15% while the median survival for locally advanced and for metastatic disease, which collectively represent over 80% of individuals, is about 10 and 6 months respectively

I will post my website with registration/donation link and GPS /mileage info as we approach the date. There are many bailout options for those that can’t do the whole ride.

We also want to have fun so no whiners, STRAVAssholes, or jerks!

This should be a good prep ride for those of you doing the Whiskey 50 or 25 at months end.
